Sony has officially unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro, a powerful mid-generation upgrade to its current gaming console. The announcement came during a PS5 Technical Presentation hosted by Mark Cerny, Lead System Architect for PS4 and PS5.
The PS5 Pro is set to launch on November 7, 2024, with a price tag of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY (including tax). Preorders for the console will begin on September 26, 2024.
One of the most significant upgrades in the PS5 Pro is its GPU, which features 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory compared to the standard PS5. This allows the console to render games up to 45% faster, resulting in smoother gameplay and enhanced visuals.
The PS5 Pro also boasts Advanced Ray Tracing capabilities, enabling dynamic light reflection and refraction at two to three times the speed of the base console. Additionally, the console introduces AI-driven upscaling with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which enhances image sharpness and resolution.
Storage has also been upgraded, with the PS5 Pro featuring a 2TB SSD. However, the console will be available only as a disc-less version. Players who prefer physical media can purchase a separately sold disc drive.
Other notable features include support for VRR and 8K gaming, as well as Wi-Fi 7 in supported regions. The PS5 Pro’s Game Boost feature is said to enhance over 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games.
During the presentation, Cerny demonstrated the PS5 Pro’s capabilities by showcasing enhanced versions of popular titles such as Horizon: Forbidden West, Hogwarts Legacy, and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. These games exhibited improved frame rates, higher resolution visuals, and advanced ray-tracing effects.
The design of the PS5 Pro closely resembles that of the original PS5, with a striking white and black color scheme and a blue LED strip. The console features a sleeker appearance, with three diagonal lines running through the middle of each side plate.
With its impressive specifications and promise of delivering exceptional gaming experiences, the PlayStation 5 Pro is poised to be a significant addition to Sony’s gaming ecosystem when it launches later this year.
