Dhaka Transport Owners Association has announced that students in the Dhaka metropolitan area will receive half-fare benefits on all city buses starting from Monday, September 23, 2024. The decision was announced by Saiful Alam, the General Secretary of the association, during an awareness seminar for transport owners and workers in the capital.
According to Saiful Alam, students will be eligible for the half-fare benefit upon showing their uniform or a photo ID card. The previous time restriction, which limited the benefit from 8 am to 8 pm, has been lifted. Students can now avail the half-fare from 6 am to 12 midnight, seven days a week.
The decision will be applicable to all routes and areas within the Dhaka metropolitan region. Abdullah Mehedi Dipto, the convener of the Safe Road Movement (NISA), expressed gratitude towards the students for their significant contribution to the 2024 mass movement, which led to the implementation of the half-fare system.
Dipto also called upon the government to extend the half-fare benefit to all modes of transportation, including trains and waterways, and not just buses.
The announcement comes as a positive development for students in Dhaka, who have been demanding the implementation of the half-fare system in public transportation for a long time. The decision is expected to provide much-needed relief to students who rely on public transport for their daily commute to educational institutions.
