On October 28, 2024, Apple announced the launch of its latest iMac, featuring the powerful M4 chip and the groundbreaking capabilities of Apple Intelligence. The new all-in-one desktop boasts enhanced performance, a nano-texture display option, a 12MP Center Stage camera, and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity, all wrapped in a stunningly thin design.
According to John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, “iMac is beloved by millions of users, from families at home to entrepreneurs hard at work. With the incredible features of Apple Intelligence and the powerful performance of Apple silicon, the new iMac changes the game once again.”
The M4 chip delivers a significant boost in performance compared to its predecessor, the M1. The new iMac is up to 1.7x faster for daily productivity tasks and up to 2.1x faster for demanding workflows like photo editing and gaming. The Neural Engine in M4 is now over 3x faster than on iMac with M1, making it the world’s best all-in-one for AI.
Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system that transforms how users work, communicate, and express themselves while protecting their privacy, is built into the new iMac. With systemwide Writing Tools, users can refine their words by rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text nearly everywhere they write. The redesigned Siri allows users to move fluidly between spoken and typed requests, accelerating tasks throughout their day.
The new iMac comes in a vibrant array of colors, including green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and silver. The back of the iMac features bold colors designed to stand out, while the front expresses subtle shades of the new palette, allowing users to focus on their work. Every iMac comes with a color-matched Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse or optional Magic Trackpad, all of which now feature a USB-C port for convenient charging.
For the first time, the expansive 24-inch 4.5K Retina display on iMac is available with a nano-texture glass option, drastically reducing reflections and glare while maintaining outstanding image quality. This allows users to place their iMac in more spaces, such as sun-drenched living rooms or bright storefronts.
The new iMac also features an enhanced video calling experience with a 12MP Center Stage camera and support for Desk View. Center Stage keeps everyone perfectly centered on a video call, while Desk View simultaneously shows the user and a top-down view of their desk, which is useful for educators and creators.
Connectivity options include four Thunderbolt 4 ports for superfast data transfers and the ability to connect even more accessories, including external storage, docks, and up to two 6K external displays. The iMac also supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
The new iMac with M4 starts at $1,299 (U.S.) and $1,249 (U.S.) for education, with pre-orders beginning on October 28 and availability starting Friday, November 8. The iMac is designed with the environment in mind, featuring 100 percent recycled aluminum in the stand and 100 percent recycled gold plating, tin soldering, and copper in multiple printed circuit boards.
As Apple continues to push the boundaries of innovation with its powerful M-series chips and AI-driven features, the new iMac represents a significant step forward in the evolution of the all-in-one desktop computer.
