The As-Sunnah Foundation, a prominent non-profit organization in Bangladesh, has taken a significant step to address the long-standing accommodation crisis faced by students of Jagannath University (JnU). On December 10, 2024, the foundation announced its commitment to providing residential facilities for 700 students of the university. This initiative was formalized through an agreement signed between the university and the foundation at a ceremony held in the Vice Chancellor’s conference room.

Sheikh Ahmadullah, the founder and chairman of the As-Sunnah Foundation, revealed details of the project during the event. “Initially, we have arranged housing for 700 students with all necessary amenities to ensure a healthy living environment,” he stated. He also highlighted plans to include a 100-computer lab to support students’ academic and skill development needs. The proposed facility will feature robust security measures, and Sheikh Ahmadullah expressed intentions to extend similar accommodations for female students in the future.

The agreement signing ceremony was attended by key university officials, including the Vice Chancellor, Proctor, Acting Registrar, Director of Student Welfare, and Examination Controller. This development comes as a much-needed relief for JnU students who have long struggled with inadequate on-campus housing options.

Established in 2005 as a full-fledged public university, Jagannath University currently operates with limited facilities on its 11-acre campus in Dhaka. Despite catering to over 17,000 students across 38 departments, the institution has faced criticism for failing to provide adequate residential facilities. Efforts to construct a new campus in Keraniganj have been mired in delays since its approval in 2018, leaving many students reliant on expensive and often substandard private accommodations.

The As-Sunnah Foundation’s intervention is expected to alleviate some of these challenges. Founded in 2017 by Sheikh Ahmadullah, the organization has been actively involved in various charitable initiatives, including education support, disaster relief, and community development. This latest project underscores its commitment to improving educational opportunities and living conditions for Bangladeshi students.

While this initiative marks a positive step forward, it also highlights the broader issue of insufficient infrastructure at public universities like JnU. Students and stakeholders continue to urge authorities to expedite ongoing projects and ensure transparency in their execution. For now, however, this partnership between Jagannath University and the As-Sunnah Foundation offers hope for a better future for its students.
