A ten-member Chinese national emergency medical team is set to arrive in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Sunday, September 22, 2024 to provide advanced medical treatment to those severely injured during the recent student-led mass uprising that ousted long-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in early August.

The medical team, dispatched at the request of Bangladesh’s interim government headed by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, will fly in from Kunming, China. Their flight is scheduled to land at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 1:35 pm local time, where they will be welcomed by Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen.

The student-led movement, which began in July 2024, culminated on August 5 when Hasina resigned and fled to India in the face of intense protests. The demonstrations turned violent, with clashes between protesters and security forces resulting in over 300 deaths and tens of thousands of injuries.

Professor Yunus, a longtime critic of Hasina, took charge as the Chief Adviser of the interim government on August 8. He has emphasized the critical role students will play in the new administration, stating, “Every ministry should have a student.”

The Chinese medical team’s visit comes as Bangladesh grapples with the aftermath of the uprising and the challenges of transitioning to a new government. The interim administration faces the task of creating a conducive environment for democratic elections while managing the country’s pressing issues.

Chief Adviser Yunus is expected to address the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 27, where he will highlight the heroism of the student uprising, the reform agendas of his government, and Bangladesh’s commitment to democratic values and good governance in the post-Hasina era.

As the nation begins to heal, the Chinese medical team’s expertise is expected to provide much-needed support to those who suffered severe injuries during the protests, offering a glimmer of hope for the country’s future.
