Green Chili Prices Drop 160 Taka per Kg in Hili Border Market

No time to read? Just listen to the news!

TL;DR:

  • Green chilli prices have dropped by Tk 160 per kg at Hili market in Dinajpur, with Indian green chillies now selling at Tk 240 per kg
  • The price decrease is attributed to the increased import of green chillies from India, with 27 Indian trucks importing 231 tons on October 15 alone
  • Consumers express relief but emphasize the need for further price reductions to benefit common people amid high prices of daily essentials
  • Regular government market monitoring is crucial to ensure stable and affordable prices for consumers

In a welcome relief for consumers, the price of green chilies has significantly decreased at the Hili market in Dinajpur, Bangladesh. According to local traders, Indian green chilies are now being sold at Tk 240 per kg, a substantial reduction of Tk 160 from the previous prices.

The price drop was observed during a visit to the Hili Bazaar on Wednesday morning, October 16, 2024. Retail traders attribute the fall in prices to the increased import of green chillies from India. On October 15 alone, 27 Indian trucks imported 231 tons of green chillies through the Hili land port.

Salman Mahmud Noor, a customer at the Hili market, expressed his relief, stating, “I bought green chillies at the rate of Tk 350 to 400 per kg during the Puja holidays. Currently, the price has come down from Tk 100 to Tk 160 per kg. That’s why I bought a kg of raw chillies today.” However, Noor also emphasized the need for further price reductions, suggesting that a price of Tk 50 to 60 per kg would greatly benefit common people, especially considering the high prices of all daily products in the market.

Biplab Sheikh, a chilli seller at Hili Bazaar, confirmed the price drop, stating that Indian chillies were previously sold at Tk 350 to Tk 400. He attributed the decrease to the increased import from India, with current prices for Indian green chillies at Tk 240 per kg. However, Sheikh also noted that the number of buyers has significantly decreased compared to earlier.

The reduction in green chilli prices comes as a much-needed respite for consumers grappling with the high costs of daily essentials. Regular market monitoring by the government is crucial to ensure that prices remain stable and affordable for the common people.

As the import of green chillies from India continues, it remains to be seen whether the prices will further decrease in the coming days. The situation highlights the importance of maintaining a steady supply of essential commodities to keep prices in check and provide relief to consumers.
