No Decision Yet on Releasing Water from Kaptai Dam Amid Rising Water Levels

TL;DR

  • No immediate decision to release water from Kaptai Lake despite rising levels.
  • Current water level is slightly above 103 feet MSL, below the 108 feet threshold for release.
  • Heavy rainfall is causing water levels to rise at a rate of 10 to 12 hours per foot.
  • Any decision to release water will be communicated to the media at least six hours in advance.

As heavy rainfall continues to affect the region, the Kaptai Hydropower Plant authority has announced that no decision has been made regarding the release of water from Kaptai Lake. ATM Abduzzaher, the plant’s manager, addressed circulating rumors this afternoon, clarifying that claims of an imminent release are unfounded.

Kaptai Lake, a crucial reservoir for the region, currently holds water at a level slightly above 103 feet Mean Sea Level (MSL), well below its maximum capacity of 109 feet MSL. Abduzzaher emphasized that the plant only considers releasing water when levels approach 108 feet. He reassured the public, stating, “We only consider releasing water when the level approaches 108 feet,” urging people not to believe false information.

The water level in Kaptai Lake is rising at a rate of 10 to 12 hours per foot, indicating no immediate risk of reaching the critical level within the next 24 hours. However, if heavy rainfall persists and the water level nears 108 feet, a decision will be made in consultation with the district administration. Abduzzaher assured that any decision regarding water release would be communicated to the media at least six hours in advance.

The ongoing heavy rainfall has contributed to rising water levels in local rivers and Kaptai Lake, prompting concerns among residents and local authorities. The Kaptai Hydropower Plant, situated in the southeastern region of Bangladesh, plays a pivotal role in managing water resources and generating electricity for the area.

The plant’s management remains vigilant, closely monitoring weather conditions and water levels to ensure the safety and well-being of the surrounding communities. As the situation develops, residents are advised to stay informed through official channels and avoid spreading or believing unverified information circulating on social media.
