China has announced a significant contribution to aid relief efforts. On Sunday, Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen met with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to express sympathy and solidarity with the flood-affected people of Bangladesh. During the meeting, Ambassador Yao announced that the Red Cross Society of China will donate $100,000 in cash to the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society for emergency humanitarian assistance.
Additionally, the Chinese Embassy has pledged to donate $20,000 to the Chief Adviser’s Relief and Welfare Fund. They will also provide food and other relief supplies valued at Tk60 lakh to support the people in Feni and other affected regions. Minister Counsellor Liu Yuyin, along with other diplomats from the Chinese Embassy, has already traveled to the affected areas to oversee and participate in relief activities.
Ambassador Yao conveyed his shock at the heavy casualties and property losses resulting from the floods. He expressed his deepest condolences to the victims, stating, “China stands ready to provide further support and assistance to Bangladesh as needed.” He emphasized the strong partnership between China and Bangladesh, noting that the two countries are Comprehensive Strategic Partners. The ambassador assured that the Chinese people share the suffering of the Bangladeshi people and are committed to helping them overcome the disaster and rebuild their homes.
In addition to governmental aid, Chinese enterprises and personnel in Bangladesh have actively participated in relief efforts, donating Tk40 lakh in cash and nearly Tk36 lakh worth of supplies to the affected areas as of August 24. Donations are ongoing, as stated by the embassy.
Furthermore, in accordance with an agreement between the two countries, China is providing Bangladesh with hydrological information from the upstream river twice daily to assist in managing the flood crisis. This collaborative effort underscores the strong bilateral ties and mutual support between China and Bangladesh in times of need.
