Jubo Dal Expels Leader Seen With Machete During KUET Clashes

Summary:

  • Mahbubur Rahman, vice-president of Daulatpur Thana Jubo Dal, was expelled for violating organizational discipline after being seen wielding a machete during clashes at KUET.
  • The violent incident occurred between Chhatra Dal and Students Against Discrimination over restrictions on student politics, leaving at least 50 students injured.
  • Mahbubur was identified by locals as a masked individual involved in the clash, though Jubo Dal leaders stated his actions were personal and not linked to the party.
  • The clashes highlight tensions surrounding the ban on student politics at KUET, imposed after the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024.

A Jubo Dal leader has been expelled after being identified brandishing a machete during violent clashes between student groups at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET). Mahbubur Rahman, vice-president of Daulatpur Thana Jubo Dal in Khulna, was removed from the youth wing of the BNP for actions “contrary to organisational discipline,” according to a press release signed by Nurul Islam Sohel, the party’s central office secretary.

The clashes erupted Tuesday over longstanding restrictions on student politics at KUET, imposed after the Awami League government’s collapse in August 2024. At least 50 students were injured, many with sharp weapon wounds, during the hour-long violence. Witnesses identified Mahbubur as a masked individual wielding a machete, though local Jubo Dal leaders claimed his involvement was “a personal decision” unrelated to the party.

“Mahbub’s presence during the KUET clashes was his own choice,” said Rabiul Islam Rubel, Khulna city Jubo Dal’s member secretary, distancing the organization from the incident. The expulsion, announced Wednesday, comes amid heightened scrutiny of political tensions on university campuses.

KUET authorities have yet to comment on the clashes or potential disciplinary measures. The incident marks the first major unrest at the institution since the August 2024 policy banning student political activities, raising concerns about escalating violence ahead of nationwide student union elections.
