Police in Batiaghata, Khulna are investigating an alleged rape of a three-months-pregnant woman by a neighbor, with the accused remaining at large days after the attack. The victim’s husband filed a formal complaint on February 19, 2025, at Batiaghata Police Station, accusing Imran Hossain, a local resident, of sexually assaulting his wife early Monday morning while he was away fishing.

The incident reportedly occurred around midnight on February 17 when the husband left their home to fish in a nearby canal. Authorities and family members state that Hossain, taking advantage of the woman’s isolation, allegedly entered the house and assaulted her. The victim was later admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment, though her current condition remains undisclosed.

Monirul Islam, the investigating officer of Batiaghata Police Station, confirmed the case has been prioritized. “We are treating this with utmost seriousness. Raids are ongoing to apprehend the accused, who fled immediately after the crime,” he said. No arrests have been made as of Thursday.

The case has drawn attention to rising concerns about violence against women in rural Bangladesh, particularly crimes targeting vulnerable individuals. While national laws mandate stringent penalties for sexual assault, activists cite inconsistent enforcement and social stigma as barriers to justice.

Local authorities urge anyone with information about Hossain’s whereabouts to contact Batiaghata Police Station. Investigations continue as forensic teams analyze evidence from the scene.
