Actress Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed filed the general diary on November 23, 2024, reporting the deaths of ten dogs and one cat over the past few days.
The victims were reportedly found “running around, writhing in pain and vomiting blood” after consuming poisoned food in the residential area. The complaint specifically names Shahanur, the General Secretary of Japan Garden City Flat Owners’ Association, alleging his involvement in orchestrating the poisoning in collaboration with local residents.
Officer-in-Charge Mahfuz Imtiaz Bhuiyan of Adabor Police Station confirmed that law enforcement has responded to the situation, stating, “A police team went to the spot last night and tried to bring the situation under control.”
The incident has sparked outrage among animal welfare activists and celebrities. Notable figures including Jaya Ahsan, Niloy Alamgir, and Jannatul Sumaiya Himi have taken to social media to protest against the brutal killings.
Some residents had previously expressed concerns about the growing stray animal population in the area, claiming incidents of aggressive behavior towards children. This reportedly led to the formation of a Japan Garden City Life Society team that allegedly carried out the poisoning.
Dr. Md Emdadul Hoque, Deputy Chief Health Officer of Dhaka North City Corporation, addressed the situation, stating, “We will have a talk tomorrow to find out what happened and act accordingly. No dog culling programme or any such activity is being run as part of the city corporation.”
The poisoning violates the Animal Welfare Act 2019, which prohibits cruel treatment of animals. Under this legislation, perpetrators can face up to two years of imprisonment and/or fines up to Taka fifty thousand for causing death or harm to animals through poisoning.
The People for Animal Welfare (PAW) Foundation has joined the protest against these killings. Actress Nawshaba emphasized, “Animals and birds do not have a voice. When they face any problems, they cannot do something about it for themselves. So, we must protest against these incidents of cruelty and arrange for exemplary punishment.”
Police authorities have confirmed they are investigating the matter and taking necessary legal actions against those responsible for this act of animal cruelty.
