Eight students from Dhaka University have been suspended for their alleged involvement in the brutal killing of Tofazzal Hossain, a 35-year-old man who was lynched at the university’s Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall dormitory on Wednesday night. The decision to suspend the students was announced by the university authorities in a press release on Thursday, September 21, 2024.
Among the expelled students are three former leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), including Jalal Ahmed, a former deputy secretary of science and technology affairs, Ahsan Ullah, former secretary of mass communication and development affairs, and Al Hossain Sajjad, a student of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences who served as the BCL office secretary.
The other suspended students are Mohammad Sumon from the Department of Soil, Water, and Environment, Muttakin Sakin from the Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Md Firoz Kabir from the Department of Botany, and two students from the Department of Physics, Md Abdus Samad and Wazibul Alam.
Six of the eight accused students have already been arrested by the authorities, including Jalal Mia, Mohammad Suman, Ahsan Ullah, Muttakin Sakin, Al Hossain Sajjad, and Wazibul Alam.
In addition to the student suspensions, the Dhaka University authorities have also removed the provost of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall and appointed a new provost to fill the position.
