Police recovered the body of Anika Meherun Nesa, a Dhaka University student, from a residential building in Dhaka’s New Market area early Sunday. The third-year student from the Disaster Science and Management department was found hanging from a ceiling fan in Maksud Bhawan around 2:00 AM, according to law enforcement officials.

“Preliminary evidence suggests suicide, but we are investigating all angles,” said Md. Tariq, Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s New Market Zone. A suspect has been detained for questioning, though authorities have not disclosed further details about the individual.

Anika, enrolled in the 2020-21 academic session, hailed from Badalgachhi Upazila in Naogaon district. Her body was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy, with police stating it will be returned to her family afterward.

The incident has sparked concerns among students and faculty, though university authorities have yet to issue an official statement. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses to determine the circumstances leading to her death.

No suicide note was found at the scene, according to sources close to the investigation. Further updates await the autopsy report and forensic analysis.
