Panchagarh’s Temperature Falls to 15°C as Winter Grips Northern Bangladesh

TL;DR:

  • Panchagarh is experiencing dense fog and cold winds, with temperatures dropping to 15.6°C on November 17, 2024.
  • The region’s proximity to the Himalayas contributes to the early onset of winter, with colder weather expected in the coming days.
  • Local farmers continue their work despite the cold, as fog and dew cover the fields in the early mornings.
  • Businesses are preparing for winter, with increased demand for blankets and winter clothing as temperatures fall.

Panchagarh, Bangladesh – November 17, 2024: The northern district of Panchagarh has been enveloped in a thick blanket of fog as temperatures continue to drop, marking the early arrival of winter in the region. On Sunday morning, the temperature was recorded at 15.6°C by the Tetulia Weather Observatory, a significant decrease from the previous day’s 17°C.

The cold snap is being attributed to Panchagarh’s proximity to the Himalayas, which makes it more susceptible to early and intense winter conditions compared to other parts of Bangladesh. The dense fog and cold winds blowing in from the mountains have intensified the chill, with residents reporting a noticeable increase in coldness, particularly during the early morning and evening hours.

“Over the past few days, we have observed a gradual drop in temperature,” said Russell Shah, acting officer at the Tetulia Weather Observatory. “This morning’s temperature was 15.6°C, and we expect it to decrease further as we move deeper into winter.”

Despite the cold, local farmers are continuing their work in the fields. Early in the morning, light fog was seen hanging over the landscape, with dew droplets glistening on grass blades. Farmers were seen walking through the misty fields, undeterred by the chill as they tended to their crops.

The arrival of colder weather has also led to increased activity among local businesses preparing for winter. Blanket and quilt makers have ramped up production to meet rising demand, while stores are stocking up on winter clothing in anticipation of brisk sales.

Local residents have noted that this year’s winter seems to be arriving earlier than usual. “The cold has been increasing for a few days now,” said one resident. “We’ve already started using blankets at night because it gets quite chilly after sunset.”

Panchagarh’s unique geographical position near the Himalayas means that it typically experiences winter earlier than other parts of Bangladesh. The months from mid-November to February are known for particularly cold weather in this region, with temperatures often dropping sharply during this period.

As residents brace for what could be a colder-than-usual season, meteorologists are keeping a close watch on temperature trends. With the fog showing no signs of lifting and cold winds continuing to blow from the north, it is expected that temperatures will continue to decline in the coming days.
