TL;DR
- Bangladesh adds 8.5 million cubic feet of gas to national grid from Sylhet-7 well in Haripur on November 4, 2024, boosting energy resources.
- Sylhet Gas Fields Limited confirms successful test supply, with the well capable of providing 8.5 million cubic feet of gas daily.
- Sylhet-7, an old well under exploration since July, yielded significant gas discoveries at depths of 2,010 and 1,200 meters.
- This development is expected to enhance Bangladesh’s domestic gas production and help meet growing energy demands.
Bangladesh’s national grid received a significant boost as 8.5 million cubic feet of gas was added from the Sylhet-7 gas well in Haripur, Jaintapur Upazila. The connection to the national transmission line was established on Monday, November 4, 2024, marking a crucial development in the country’s energy sector.
Md. Mizanur Rahman, Managing Director of Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL), confirmed the news, stating, “An additional 8.5 million cubic feet of gas from well number 7 is now being supplied to the national grid on a test basis.”
The Sylhet-7 well, an old gas well, has been under exploration since July. On October 14, tests conducted at a depth of 2,010 meters revealed 7 million cubic feet of gas. Subsequently, on October 22, another 8.5 million cubic feet of gas was discovered at a depth of 1,200 meters in the same well.
Following a week of experimental gas production, the well was prepared for continuous supply to the national grid. Officials have indicated that the well can supply 8.5 million cubic feet of gas daily, significantly contributing to the country’s energy resources.
The history of the Sylhet-7 well dates back to 1986 when it was initially drilled for oil production. Oil extraction continued until 1994, after which the focus shifted to gas extraction. The recent discovery of new gas layers during renovation work has breathed new life into this old well.
Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration & Production Company Limited (BAPEX) currently operates 14 wells in Sylhet, including:
- 2 wells in Haripur gas field, Jaintapur
- 3 wells in Kailashtila, Golapganj
- 7 wells in Rashidpur
- 2 wells in Beanibazar
This latest addition to the national grid is expected to play a crucial role in meeting Bangladesh’s growing energy demands and bolstering its domestic gas production capabilities.
