Students from the Bangladesh University of Textiles (BUTEX) are urging the interim government to intervene in the medical treatment of their fellow student, Abdullah Al Labib, who is currently on life support following a severe accident. The incident occurred on August 25, 2024, as Labib and his peers were returning to Dhaka after distributing relief to flood victims in Feni.

The accident took place on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway near Gouripur when their pickup van collided with a tractor. Labib, along with another student, Sajjad Al Mamun, both from the university’s 49th batch, sustained critical injuries. Initially treated at the Daudkandi Upazila Complex in Cumilla, Labib’s condition deteriorated, prompting his transfer to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka via helicopter. Medical professionals have reported that Labib suffered severe internal injuries, including damage to his brain, lungs, chest, spinal cord, and testicles, resulting in internal bleeding.

Labib’s involvement in social and political movements has been significant. He actively participated in the 2018 Safe Roads Movement and the Quota Reform Movement while still in school. More recently, he was a key figure in the anti-discrimination student movement, serving as a coordinator for BUTEX’s panel. His commitment extended to efforts aimed at reforming student politics and abolishing the zonal system within the university.

In the wake of the accident, BUTEX students have rallied in support of Labib, highlighting his dedication to societal betterment. They recounted how Labib initiated a relief fund for flood victims, mobilizing his friends to collect donations throughout the Tejgaon area. As they returned from distributing these relief materials, the accident left Labib fighting for his life.

Students have described Labib as a visionary, dedicated to national progress. They expressed their admiration for his patriotism and courage, emphasizing his willingness to sacrifice for the greater good.

In light of Labib’s contributions and current predicament, the students are appealing to Dr. Md. Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the interim government, to take responsibility for Labib’s medical expenses and ensure all necessary measures for his recovery. They argue that, like previous cases where the state provided free medical treatment to injured activists of the anti-discrimination movement, Labib deserves similar support as a front-line fighter and coordinator of the movement.

The students’ plea underscores the broader issue of state responsibility in supporting individuals who have shown exceptional dedication to societal causes. They view Labib as a national asset whose well-being is of paramount importance.
