Five more deaths from dengue have been reported in Bangladesh within the last 24 hours, raising the total fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease to 182 this year. During this period, 927 new patients were hospitalized with dengue fever, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The recent fatalities include two individuals in Dhaka South City Corporation, one in Dhaka North City Corporation, and two in the Barishal division.

The ongoing dengue outbreak has severely impacted various regions, with Dhaka being one of the most affected areas. Of the newly hospitalized patients, 260 were admitted to facilities in Dhaka North City Corporation, while 172 received treatment in Dhaka South City Corporation. The DGHS records indicate a significant increase in dengue cases this year, with a total of 35,365 cases reported since January 1, 2024.

This surge follows last year’s record-breaking dengue outbreak in Bangladesh, which saw 1,705 deaths and 321,179 cases, marking it as the deadliest year on record for the disease. The government has responded by implementing a comprehensive seven-year National Dengue Prevention and Control Strategy (2024-2030) aimed at drastically reducing infections and mortality rates.

Health experts warn that the situation could worsen if immediate measures are not taken. Entomologists have noted that current weather conditions in Bangladesh are conducive to mosquito breeding, exacerbating the spread of dengue. The government is urged to enhance vector control efforts and public awareness campaigns to mitigate the impact of this ongoing health crisis.
