A festive New Year’s Eve turned tragic in Natore’s Baraigram upazila as an SSC candidate lost his life after falling from a three-story building’s rooftop during celebrations.

Ishtiak, a student at St. Joseph High School in the Bonpara area, was celebrating with friends at a residence in the Kalikapur area when the incident occurred. The tragedy unfolded when he reportedly lost his footing while distracted by his mobile phone.

Local medical professionals pronounced him dead upon arrival at a nearby clinic after he sustained severe injuries from the fall. “Further action will be taken if the family files a formal complaint in this regard,” stated Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Baraigram Police Station.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of widespread New Year celebrations across Bangladesh, where despite official bans, festivities included fireworks and crackers filling the night sky. Five other persons, including three children, were also injured in separate incidents involving firecrackers and lanterns during New Year’s celebrations in Dhaka.

This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of safety concerns during festive celebrations, particularly regarding rooftop gatherings. The deceased was preparing for his upcoming SSC examinations, adding to the poignancy of the loss.

The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a joyous transition into 2025, prompting discussions about safety measures during public celebrations. Local authorities are monitoring the situation, though no formal complaint has been filed as of yet.
