Police Constable Arrested After 12 Years for Fake Freedom Fighter Quota Job

Summary:

  • Bangladesh police arrest constable Mohammad Suman for fraudulently obtaining job using fake freedom fighter quota
  • Suman falsely claimed to be grandson of freedom fighter, using neighbor’s certificate in 2012 recruitment
  • Fraud discovered after 12 years following complaint, investigation confirmed allegations
  • Suman voluntarily resigned in December 2023 while investigation was ongoing, arrested upon return from India

Police in Brahmanbaria have arrested Mohammad Suman, a police constable accused of fraudulently obtaining his position by falsely claiming to be the grandson of a freedom fighter. The arrest comes 12 years after Suman’s initial recruitment.

Suman was apprehended on Friday evening at the Akhaura Immigration Checkpoint upon returning from India. He was subsequently sent to jail through a court order on Saturday afternoon.

“Based on confidential information, we arrested him from the Akhaura International Immigration Police Checkpoint area,” confirmed Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mozaffar Hossain of Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station.

The case against Suman was filed on December 21, 2023, at the Brahmanbaria Sadar Model Police Station. He had been evading authorities since before the case was lodged.

According to the case details:

  • Suman, son of Nannu Mia from Mogra village in Akhaura upazila, participated in the Trainee Recruit Constable (TRC) exam in 2012.
  • He submitted the freedom fighter certificate of his neighbor, Md. Hossain Mia, falsely claiming to be Hossain’s grandson to qualify for the freedom fighter quota.
  • Suman’s actual grandfather is Altaf Ali Hossain, not the freedom fighter Md. Hossain Mia.

The fraudulent recruitment came to light when a local youth, Md. Farhad Mia, filed a written complaint with the Brahmanbaria Superintendent of Police on October 21, 2024. An investigation led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Md. Delowar Hossain confirmed the allegations.

The investigation revealed:

  • Suman was appointed as a Trainee Recruit Constable on July 3, 2012.
  • He completed six months of basic training and began serving as a constable on March 29, 2013.
  • Suman received government benefits, including salary and rations, throughout his service.

On December 1, 2023, while the investigation was ongoing, Suman voluntarily resigned from his position at Burichang Police Station in Cumilla, citing personal and family reasons.

The arrest highlights ongoing efforts to maintain integrity in public service recruitment and address fraudulent claims to reserved quotas in Bangladesh.
