- Discovery follows recent inspection of infamous “Aynaghar” by commission and media
A secret detention center has been discovered within the Bogura Police Lines, according to the Commission on Enforced Disappearances. Commission member Nur Khan revealed this information during a press conference held at the commission’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
Khan stated, “A secret detention facility resembling a prison was created inside the police lines, which is completely absurd. We found this in Bogura. We believe we will find more such detention centers in many cases.”
The commission member explained that detainees from various districts were brought to this facility and subjected to torture under the guise of interrogation. He suggested that these secret detention centers were likely constructed within the last 10-12 years, possibly resulting in deaths of some detainees.
This revelation comes after the commission’s visit to the infamous “Aynaghar” (House of Mirrors) on February 12, 2025. Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, along with domestic and foreign media personnel and victims, inspected the facility.
The “Aynaghar” gained notoriety after reports emerged of law enforcement agencies forcibly detaining individuals from various backgrounds in these “special” locations. Many of those who disappeared returned to their families after Sheikh Hasina’s government lost power, sharing harrowing accounts of their experiences in these secret detention centers.
The discovery of the secret detention center in Bogura Police Lines adds a new dimension to the ongoing investigation into enforced disappearances in Bangladesh. As the commission continues its work, more such facilities may be uncovered, shedding light on the extent of human rights violations during the previous administration.
