A shocking incident in Faridpur’s Bhanga Upazila has sparked widespread outrage after a 75-year-old man was publicly humiliated and physically assaulted over allegations of theft. The incident occurred on the morning of Sunday, January 26, 2025, at the historic Kalamridha Bazaar in the Kalamridha Union.

According to reports, the elderly man, identified as Amarendra Kumar Ghosh Palan from Naopara village, was accused of stealing a mobile phone from a vegetable market customer. In response to the accusation, several individuals detained him and subjected him to public humiliation. A video of the incident, which later went viral on social media platforms like Facebook, shows the elderly man being forced to hold his ears while being verbally abused and beaten. Some individuals used sticks to strike him while shouting “thief” repeatedly. He was also made to walk around the market in this humiliating position.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that the incident unfolded around 10 a.m. when a customer claimed their phone had been taken by the elderly man. Ibrahim, a trader at Kalamridha Bazaar, expressed his disapproval of the mob’s actions, stating that such behavior was unacceptable regardless of the circumstances. He added, “The elderly man was forced to squat holding his ears and paraded around the market before being released.”

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation online, with many calling for justice and accountability for those involved in the assault. Despite the public outcry, local authorities have yet to take formal action. Bhanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mokhlesur Rahman stated, “We have not yet received any complaints regarding this matter. However, we will investigate and take appropriate measures if a formal complaint is lodged.”

This troubling event highlights concerns about mob justice and the lack of due process in addressing alleged crimes. It also underscores the need for community education on legal rights and procedures to prevent such incidents in the future. As discussions surrounding this case continue to grow, many are urging authorities to ensure that justice is served and that similar incidents are prevented from recurring.
