A Bangladeshi couple sacrificed their lives while rescuing their daughters from dangerous waters at Conspicuous Beach near Walpole in Western Australia’s South-West region.
Shahidul Hasan Swapan, 44, and his wife Sabrina Ahmed Papri, 40, drowned on Saturday afternoon while successfully saving their daughters, including infant Sianna, from treacherous waves. The couple, who were visiting from Perth with family and friends during the Christmas holidays, responded immediately when a sudden wave swept their children into the sea.
Emergency services arrived at the scene around 2:40 PM after receiving distress calls. Three adults were found unconscious when brought to shore. Despite immediate CPR efforts by police, Swapan and Papri could not be revived. A third adult, aged 42, was successfully resuscitated and transported to hospital.
Swapan served as an associate professor in the Department of Urban Planning at Curtin University, Perth, where he had also completed his PhD. Both he and his wife were alumni of Khulna University’s Urban and Regional Planning (URP) department in Bangladesh.
The tragic incident has deeply affected the local Bangladeshi community in Australia. Local authorities are preparing a report for the coroner, and arrangements are being made to hand over the couple’s bodies to their family.
This devastating event follows another tragic drowning earlier this year when Bangladeshi national Newaz Mohammad Saifullah lost his life in Australian waters.
