Popular actress Zinat Sanu Swagata faces potential legal action following her public disclosure about having lived with her current husband Dr. Hasan Azad before their marriage. Supreme Court lawyer Muhammad Mesbah Uddin Chowdhury has issued a legal notice demanding she withdraw her statement and issue a public apology within seven days.
The notice, filed on behalf of Ariful Khabir, claims that Swagata’s statements promoting live-in relationships have hurt Muslim religious sentiments, as such arrangements are considered forbidden in Islam.
Defending her position, Swagata explained her decision was influenced by her previous marriage experience: “I wanted to get to know the person I planned to marry. Two consenting adults chose to live together – how is that a mistake? My first marriage failed, and I was left with fears and doubts about marriage.”
The actress, who married Dr. Hasan Azad in January 2024 at Gausul Azam Jame Masjid, has stated she has not yet received any formal notice. She emphasized that if served with legal documents, she will address the matter through proper legal channels.
Swagata’s previous seven-year marriage to Rashed Zaman ended in divorce following allegations of mental and physical abuse. Speaking about changing social norms, she stated: “Society is progressing. Divorce is being accepted, and live-in relationships will also become normal in time.”
The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between evolving social practices and traditional religious values in Bangladesh, as the actress continues to advocate for greater acceptance of modern relationship dynamics while facing pushback from conservative elements of society.
