Sarjis Alam, a key coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has announced his resignation from the position of General Secretary at the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation. The announcement came through a Facebook post on Wednesday morning, January 22, 2025.
In his statement, Alam explained that changes have been made to the foundation’s constitution, structure, and operational processes to accelerate its activities. “I am no longer in the role of General Secretary of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation. Changes have been made to the foundation’s constitution, structure, and work processes to expedite its activities,” he wrote.
According to Alam, the foundation will now be managed by an Executive Committee, with a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) overseeing daily operations. Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho is currently serving as the CEO. A Governing Body, which includes the Chief Adviser and four other advisers specializing in health, social welfare, local government, and ICT, will be responsible for policy-making.
Alam clarified that the position of General Secretary no longer exists in the new structure.
The foundation began providing financial assistance on October 1, 2024, with its office becoming operational on October 15. Alam assumed the role of General Secretary on October 21 and served for approximately two months and ten days until December 31. He officially handed over his signing authority on January 7, 2025.
During his tenure, the foundation provided financial support to 628 out of 826 verified martyrs’ families and approximately 2,000 out of 11,000 verified injured individuals from the July-August uprising.
Reflecting on his departure, Alam stated, “I served as long as I could dedicate my maximum time to the foundation. When I realized I could no longer give the necessary time, I stepped aside. To me, addressing one’s limitations and acting accordingly by taking or leaving responsibility is not a weakness; rather, it requires honest courage. I tried to remain true to the responsibilities of my chair.”
This development marks a significant change in the leadership and structure of the July Martyrs Memorial Foundation, an organization established to support the families of those affected by the July-August 2024 uprising in Bangladesh.
