In a recent incident at the Bhomra land port in Satkhira, Bangladesh, two Indian nationals were detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) after allegedly trespassing into the country in an intoxicated state. The individuals, identified as Prokash Sarkar, 39, and Dilu Sarkar, 20, are residents of Gourangonagar village in Uttar-24 Pargana district of West Bengal, India.
The event unfolded early on September 28, 2024, when the two men drove a pickup van through the integrated checkpost (ICP) gate at the port around 12:15 a.m. The vehicle caused significant damage to the crossing gate, checkpost gate, as well as to a motorcycle and an easy bike parked nearby. According to a press release from the BGB Public Relations wing, the duo was under the influence of drugs at the time of their arrest.
Following their detention, a commander-level meeting was convened between BGB and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) at approximately 1:30 a.m. During this meeting, Bangladeshi border guards lodged a strong protest against the incident. In response, BSF officials issued an apology and confirmed that the two men had entered Bangladesh after damaging multiple easy bikes and ICP gates on the Indian side.
The BGB has initiated the process of filing charges against Prokash and Dilu Sarkar and is preparing to hand them over to local police authorities for further legal action. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in managing border security and maintaining peaceful relations between neighboring countries.
