In a significant development, police have apprehended 11 individuals in relation to a daring robbery that took place at a Mohammadpur flat on Friday, October 11, 2024. Among the arrestees, five were revealed to be dismissed members of various law enforcement agencies, as confirmed by Lt Col Munim Ferdous, Director of Rapid Action Battalion’s Law and Media department.
The arrests were made during separate operations conducted across different areas of the capital on Saturday, October 12. “Among the arrestees, five are dismissed members of different forces. The other three are general people. A bracelet and a gold ring have been recovered from them,” stated Lt Col Munim Ferdous.
The incident in question occurred around 3:30am on Friday, when a group of 15-16 people, donning uniforms of the army and RAB, arrived at the main gate of house no-720/1 at Bashbari in Mohammadpur, the residence of businessman Abu Bakar on the second floor. The unsuspecting guard opened the door, mistaking the robbers for genuine law enforcers. The gang then proceeded directly to Abu Bakar’s door, demanding entry.
According to Abu Bakar’s account, the robbers initially questioned him about not submitting his legal weapon to the police station. Despite his assurance that he had done so, they began searching his flat, ransacking his almirah. The situation escalated when they forcefully entered his office and looted a substantial amount of money and ornaments from the safe kept there.
“The gang left my house around 4:15am after taking away Tk75.50 lakh and 70 bhori gold ornaments,” Abu Bakar revealed to the police.
The building’s guard, as quoted by the police, emphasized that there was no way to discern that those wearing army uniforms were not actual members of the armed forces. The robbers arrived in two private cars and two microbuses, wearing helmets and carrying a weapon.
As the investigation into this audacious crime continues, the arrests mark a significant step towards bringing the perpetrators to justice. The involvement of dismissed law enforcement officers adds a concerning dimension to the case, underscoring the need for thorough scrutiny and accountability within the ranks of the security forces.
The authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses, with the aim of ensuring the safety and security of the citizens and restoring public confidence in the wake of this unsettling incident.
