The Bangladesh government has taken steps to address the rising prices of eggs by allowing seven companies to import 4.5 crore eggs by December 31, 2024. This decision comes as part of an effort to stabilize the market and ensure an adequate supply of this essential protein source for consumers.
The commerce ministry issued a notice detailing the import permissions granted to various firms. Dhaka-based M/S Mim Enterprise and M/S Prime Care Bangladesh, along with Jashore-based M/S Tawsin Traders, have each been authorized to import one crore eggs. The remaining four companies will collectively import 1.5 crore eggs.
This temporary measure follows a recent surge in egg prices across the country. According to data from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh, the price of four eggs in Dhaka markets has increased by nearly 5 percent, rising from Tk 52-Tk 55 a month ago to Tk 54-Tk 58 today.
Bangladesh’s daily egg requirement stands at five crore eggs, with the majority of the supply for Dhaka coming from western regions such as Tangail, Jashore, Thakurgaon, Pabna, Panchagarh, and Rajshahi, as well as nearby areas like Narsingdi and Gazipur.
The government’s decision to allow egg imports aims to bridge the gap between supply and demand, potentially helping to lower prices for consumers. This move is particularly significant given that eggs are considered the most affordable source of protein in the country.
In addition to the egg import initiative, the government is taking further steps to make essential food items more accessible. Milk, eggs, and meat will be sold at reduced prices at 30 locations across the capital, as part of a broader effort to alleviate the financial burden on consumers.
As the import process unfolds, it remains to be seen how quickly and effectively this measure will impact market prices. The commerce ministry will likely monitor the situation closely to assess the impact of these imports on the domestic egg market and overall food prices.
