Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh’s interim government Chief Adviser, declared today that criminal elements within the police force will face justice, emphasizing accountability in law enforcement.
During a virtual meeting with officials from 31 districts across four divisions, Prof Yunus emphasized that police personnel must operate in alignment with the spirit of the 2024 uprising. The meeting, conducted from his Dhaka office, included key administrative and law enforcement officials from Dhaka, Chattogram, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions.
“The real government is the administration at the field level,” Prof Yunus stated, directing field administration officials to ensure the successful implementation of the interim government’s objectives. “The interim government is working to ensure everyone’s rights. Therefore, the officials involved must diligently complete various projects within the set timelines.”
The Chief Adviser outlined several priority areas requiring immediate attention. These include maintaining law and order, preserving communal harmony, ensuring proper agricultural product storage, and maintaining peace in industrial zones. He specifically emphasized the importance of managing essential commodity prices during the upcoming Ramadan period and ensuring smooth distribution of textbooks at the start of the new academic year.
The meeting saw participation from 19 senior officials, including divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, police commissioners, range police chiefs, and superintendents of police. This gathering marks a significant step in the interim government’s efforts to establish effective governance following the recent political transition in Bangladesh.
Prof Yunus, who assumed leadership of the interim government in August 2024 following widespread student protests and the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, continues to implement reforms across various sectors of the administration. His appointment as Chief Adviser came after extensive consultations between President Mohammed Shahabuddin, military chiefs, and student movement coordinators.
The Nobel laureate’s focus on police accountability comes amid ongoing efforts to reform Bangladesh’s law enforcement institutions, following recommendations from various reform commissions established under the interim government.
