Direct Flights Between Bangladesh and Pakistan May Soon Become a Reality

Summary:

  • Bangladesh is considering launching direct Dhaka-Islamabad flights to strengthen bilateral ties and boost cooperation in tourism, education, and trade.
  • High Commissioner Mohammad Iqbal Hussain highlighted growing trade relations and the increasing demand for Bangladeshi goods in Pakistan.
  • The initiative follows years of suspended air links and aims to enhance connectivity and investment opportunities in both nations.
  • The government also reaffirmed its focus on economic development and social empowerment ahead of upcoming elections.

Bangladesh is considering the launch of direct flights between Dhaka and Islamabad, a move aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including tourism, education, and trade. This announcement was made by Mohammad Iqbal Hussain, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, during a press conference in Peshawar on January 25, 2025.

The initiative reflects improving ties between the two nations, which have historically shared a complex relationship since Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan in 1971. High Commissioner Hussain emphasized the deep and historic connections between the countries and expressed optimism that direct air links would facilitate travel and foster stronger diplomatic and economic partnerships. He highlighted the modest but growing trade volume between the two nations, currently reliant on shipping routes connecting Chattogram and Karachi, and noted increasing demand for Bangladeshi goods in Pakistan.

The potential resumption of direct flights comes after years of suspension. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) had ceased operations to Dhaka in 2020 following a police raid on its local office. However, recent discussions between officials from both countries signal renewed interest in restoring air connectivity. In December 2024, Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commissioner in Karachi, S.M. Mahbubul Alam, also announced plans for direct flights during a visit to the Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry. He emphasized that such measures would strengthen business relations and invited Pakistani businesses to participate in the Dhaka International Trade Fair scheduled for January 2025.

In addition to trade and tourism, High Commissioner Hussain encouraged investment in healthcare and industrial sectors in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. He also praised social media’s role in empowering youth in Bangladesh and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to economic development as a key priority ahead of upcoming elections.

While no specific timeline has been announced for the commencement of these flights, both nations appear committed to enhancing bilateral ties. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve diplomatic relations following political changes in both countries. Observers view this development as a step toward fostering regional connectivity and mutual growth.
