Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed a desire to strengthen ties with Bangladesh during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.
Meloni called for opening a “new page” in relations between Rome and Dhaka, emphasizing that Italians are friends of Bangladesh. “Let’s try to open a new page in our relationship,” she stated during the meeting.
Professor Yunus provided an overview of the recent student-led mass uprising in Bangladesh, describing it as creating new opportunities and “pressing the reset button” for the entire nation.
The Italian Prime Minister pledged support for the interim government led by Professor Yunus in implementing crucial reforms across key sectors. “Absolutely, you can count on us,” Meloni was quoted as saying by the chief adviser’s press office.
A key topic of discussion was migration. Chief Adviser Yunus urged Italy to formalize migration channels from Bangladesh, arguing this would enable more Bangladeshi workers to enter Italy legally and reduce risky illegal migration.
Meloni agreed with this approach, stating that both countries should collaborate to curb irregular migration and provide training for Bangladeshis planning to work in Italy.
The meeting highlights efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and address shared concerns like migration management. It also indicates Italy’s willingness to support Bangladesh’s reform process under the current interim administration.
