The Mirpur-10 metro rail station in Dhaka is scheduled to resume operations on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, after being closed for two months and twenty-seven days. Mohammad Abdur Rauf, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Ltd (DMTCL), made the announcement during a press conference held at the DMTCL office in Uttara on Monday.
The station’s closure was a result of vandalism that occurred on July 19, 2024, during the “Complete Shutdown” program organized by the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement. Both Mirpur-10 and Kazipara stations were damaged in the incident, leading to their temporary shutdown.
While metro operations resumed on August 25, the two affected stations remained closed for repairs. Initially, the estimated cost for repairing the stations was set at 300 crore taka. However, a committee was later formed to reassess and scrutinize the repair costs.
An oversight committee, established by the Road Transport and Highways Division, convened on September 25 to discuss the situation. Following this meeting, it was decided to expedite the reopening of the Mirpur-10 station by utilizing engineering services from DMTCL and local IT computer products.
“We have worked diligently to restore the Mirpur-10 station and ensure its safe operation,” stated Rauf during the press conference. “We appreciate the public’s patience during this period and look forward to serving commuters once again.”
The reopening of Mirpur-10 station marks a significant step in restoring full functionality to Dhaka’s metro rail system. It is worth noting that the Kazipara station, which was also affected by the July incident, resumed operations on September 20.
This development is expected to bring relief to thousands of daily commuters who rely on the metro system for their transportation needs. The timely reopening of these stations demonstrates the authorities’ commitment to maintaining and improving Dhaka’s public transportation infrastructure.
As the Mirpur-10 station prepares to welcome passengers once again, city officials are urging commuters to follow all safety guidelines and cooperate with metro staff to ensure smooth operations.
