Three IUT Students Die in Tragic Bus Electrocution During College Picnic

TL;DR:

  • Three IUT students died from electrocution when their double-decker picnic bus contacted an 11,000-volt power line in Gazipur’s Sreepur while giving way on a narrow road.
  • The deceased were identified as Mozammel Hossain Nayeem (24), Mostakim Rahman Mahin (22), and Zubayer Alam Saqib (22), all third-year mechanical engineering students.
  • A total of 460 students were traveling in multiple buses to Matir Maya Eco Resort when the incident occurred around 10:45 AM, resulting in 10 additional injuries.
  • Two separate probe committees have been formed – one by Gazipur DC and another by IUT authorities to investigate the tragic incident.

Three students from the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) lost their lives in a tragic electrocution incident when their picnic bus came in contact with a high-voltage power line in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila on Saturday morning.

The deceased students, all third-year mechanical engineering students, were identified as Mozammel Hossain Nayeem, 24, Mostakim Rahman Mahin, 22, and Zubayer Alam Saqib, 22. The incident occurred around 10:45 AM at Udaykhali village when one of six double-decker buses carrying IUT students touched an 11,000-volt power line.

A group of 460 IUT students were traveling to Matir Maya Eco Resort in Uttar Pelaid village for their annual picnic. The tragedy unfolded when the last bus in the convoy tilted while giving way to another vehicle on a narrow rural road, making contact with the overhead power line.

Eyewitness Shamim Ahmed recounted, “When the bus became electrified, we immediately contacted the power office to cut the electrical connection. They promptly disconnected the line, preventing further casualties.”

Local resident Afsar Uddin, 70, described how the events unfolded: “Three students were electrocuted and died on the spot. The injured suffered severe burns, with some sustaining injuries to their hands, faces, or legs.”

At least ten other students sustained injuries and were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Dr. Zakiul Islam, deputy director of the hospital, confirmed receiving three bodies in the emergency department.

In response to the incident, two separate probe committees have been formed. The Gazipur Deputy Commissioner established a four-member committee headed by Additional District Magistrate Salma Akter. Simultaneously, the IUT authorities formed their own five-member investigation committee led by Pro-Vice Chancellor and Head of the Electrical Department Rakibul Islam.

Khandaker Mahmudul Hasan, deputy general manager of Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samity-2, confirmed that the power line carried 11,000 volts of electricity. The incident has raised serious questions about safety measures and the decision to use double-decker buses on narrow rural roads with low-hanging power lines.

Joynal Abedin Mandal, officer-in-charge of Sreepur police station, has confirmed the details of the incident and stated that further investigation is ongoing.
