- The initiative, effective from March 4, aims to address passenger concerns and prevent theft
- MRT police will assist with lost items, crowd management, and conflict resolution among passengers
- Additional security personnel will be deployed at metro stations to ensure comprehensive safety measures
Starting today, two members of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) police will be stationed inside each train on the Dhaka Metro Rail to enhance passenger security. This initiative, announced by MRT Police Inspector (Operations) Sujit Kumar Gomasta, aims to provide a safer travel experience for commuters as the metro service continues to expand.
The deployment involves placing two police officers in each of the six-coach trains, amounting to a total of 20 officers across the 10 operational trains. These officers will patrol the compartments to address various issues, including managing crowds, preventing theft, and assisting passengers with lost belongings or conflicts. In addition to the MRT police, an adequate number of security personnel will be present at metro stations to further ensure safety.
This security measure comes at a crucial time, coinciding with the ongoing Ramadan period and the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, which typically see increased passenger volumes. A deputy general manager of the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) emphasized that ensuring passenger safety is paramount during this busy season.
The MRT Police have been operational since November 2023, following government approval to establish a dedicated force for overseeing the safety of the metro rail system. This newly formed unit has been actively working to maintain order and provide assistance within the metro environment.
Sujit Kumar Gomasta expressed optimism that increasing the MRT Police personnel and establishing an independent unit would further enhance service quality and passenger satisfaction.
