A 16-year-old Bangladeshi teenager, Md Maruf Mia, lost his life after being shot allegedly by members of India’s Khasia community along the Bangladesh-India border in Sylhet’s Jaintiapur upazila on December 26, 2024.
The fatal incident occurred near International Main Pillar No. 128/7 in the Minatila border area around 12:30 pm. Maruf Mia, son of Md Shahabuddin from Jhingabari village in Jaintiapur upazila, was attempting to cross the border illegally when he was reportedly hit by gunfire from Khasia people.
Local residents found the injured teenager and rushed him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Despite medical intervention, Maruf succumbed to his injuries around 3:00 pm the same day.
In response to the incident, Lieutenant Colonel Md Hafizur Rahman, commander of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Sylhet 48 Battalion, confirmed that a flag meeting was conducted with the commandant of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) 4.
This incident marks another tragic episode in the series of border-related casualties along the Bangladesh-India frontier. Earlier this month, a similar incident occurred in Panchagarh district where a Bangladeshi national was fatally shot by BSF personnel along the Mominpara border.
The death of the young Maruf Mia has raised concerns about border security and civilian safety in the region, particularly along the sensitive Bangladesh-India border areas near Sylhet, where such incidents have been reported previously.
“The body was taken to the hospital immediately after the incident,” confirmed local authorities, highlighting the swift response to the shooting. However, this tragic event underscores the ongoing challenges of border management and civilian protection in the region.
