Two police officers, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amir Hossain and Constable Sujan Chandra Roy, have been arrested by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in connection with the murder of Abu Sayed, a student at Begum Rokeya University who was killed by police gunfire during protests.
The arrests were confirmed by Rangpur PBI Superintendent of Police Zakir Hossain. The officers are currently being held at the PBI office for interrogation, but the specific time and place of their arrest have not been disclosed.
Amir Hossain and Sujan Chandra Roy were previously suspended and attached to police lines following the incident. On August 18, Abu Sayed’s elder brother, Ramzan Ali, filed a case naming 17 individuals and an additional 30-35 unidentified persons in connection with the murder.
The incident occurred on July 16 when protesters marched five kilometers through the city to Begum Rokeya University, with Abu Sayed joining them. Clashes erupted between the protesters and quota supporters, prompting the police to fire rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Despite the chaos, Abu Sayed stood firm, refusing to budge. At one point, he was allegedly shot in the chest by ASI Amir Ali and Constable Sujon Chandra Roi and fell to the ground.
Abu Sayed was immediately taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead by the attending physician.
On August 10, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, accompanied by Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Adviser Md Nahid Islam and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, met with Abu Sayed’s family members and offered prayers at his grave, seeking divine blessings for his soul.
