A Narayanganj court has granted a two-day remand for three individuals accused in the tragic death of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Muhtasim Masud, following a road accident in Purbachal. The decision was issued on Sunday, December 22, by Senior Judicial Magistrate Kazi Nur Mohsin after a hearing where police sought a five-day remand and defense lawyers appealed for bail. The bail plea was denied.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, December 20, at the Nila Market intersection on the 300-feet road in Rupganj upazila. Muhtasim, a 22-year-old second-year Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) student at BUET, was killed on the spot when a car, allegedly driven recklessly by 20-year-old Mubin Al Mamun, rammed into his stationary motorcycle. Two of Muhtasim’s friends, Amit Saha and Mehedi Hasan—also BUET students—were critically injured in the crash. The three were stopped at a police checkpoint and talking to officers when the accident occurred.
The accused—Mubin Al Mamun, Mirajul Karim (22), and Asif Chowdhury (19)—were detained at the scene. Police recovered an empty liquor bottle and a beer can from their vehicle, raising suspicions of impaired driving. Subsequent tests confirmed that Mubin and Mirajul had consumed alcohol and marijuana. Mubin is the son of retired Brigadier General Abdullah Al Mamun.
In response to the incident, Muhtasim’s father, Masud Mia, filed a case under the Road Transport Act 2018 against the trio. Additionally, Rupganj police filed a separate case under the Narcotics Control Act 2018 against Mubin and Mirajul for drug consumption and possession, while Asif was charged with assisting them.
Muhtasim’s death has sparked outrage among BUET students and his family members, who have labeled the incident as murder. On Sunday morning, protesters gathered outside the Narayanganj court demanding justice for Muhtasim. They continued their demonstrations until the court concluded its hearing.
The tragedy has highlighted concerns over reckless driving and substance abuse on Bangladesh’s roads. Muhtasim’s family and friends are calling for strict legal action to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
