A new online platform called Jonogon has been launched in Bangladesh to facilitate citizen petitions and ensure formal responses from relevant authorities. The platform provides a structured process for individuals to raise issues and gather public support. Once a petition reaches a certain threshold of votes, a legal team will formalize the request and submit it to the appropriate governmental or institutional bodies.
The founders of Jonogon have stated on social media that the platform aims to ensure transparency and accountability by guaranteeing that every petition, whether accepted or rejected, will receive a response outlining the reasons behind the decision.
Jonogon is the result of a collaborative effort involving a community of engineers, lawyers, and public figures. Notable co-founders include Hussain M Elius, the co-founder of ride-sharing platform Pathao, and Naseef Fatemi, founder of delivery platform DeliveryHobe.
Regarding the platform’s creation, Naseef Fatemi said, “Jonogon was started because we believed people’s voices can be heard without spilling blood or blocking the streets. There had to be a better way. So, together with the Jonogon – we’re building it.”
Looking towards the future, Fatemi envisions Jonogon becoming a helpful platform for the government and being accessible to every Bangladeshi citizen. He stated, “Once a dabi (demand) has been accepted, the jonogon (viewers of the website) will be able to view it’s progress to ensure complete transparency and a structured reliable way to get real-time updates for our projects/demands.”
In a move to promote collaboration and transparency, Jonogon operates on an open-source basis, allowing its code to be viewed, modified, and contributed to via GitHub.
The launch of Jonogon marks a significant step towards empowering Bangladeshi citizens to actively participate in shaping their society by voicing their concerns and demands through a structured, transparent, and accountable platform.
