Renowned lyricist, composer, and Islamic thinker Abu Zafar, celebrated for his timeless contributions to Bangladeshi music and literature, passed away early Friday morning, December 6, 2024, at the age of 82. He breathed his last at 3:30 am while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka, as confirmed by his daughter Jihan Faria. Abu Zafar had been battling age-related health complications for some time.

Born on May 15, 1943, in Kanchanpur village of Gorher Bari under Chandpur Union in Kumarkhali Upazila of Kushtia district, Abu Zafar’s life was one of remarkable creativity and dedication to the arts. He will be laid to rest at Kushtia Municipal Graveyard following his Namaz-e-Janaza at the Kushtia Government College field after Asr prayers.

Abu Zafar’s legacy is etched in the hearts of millions through his iconic songs such as “Ei Padma Ei Meghna”, “Tomra Bhulei Gecho Mallikadir Naam”, and “Nindar Kata Jodi Na Bidhilo Gaaye.” His song “Ei Padma Ei Meghna” was notably recognized as one of the top 20 greatest songs of all time in a BBC survey. He not only wrote and composed these masterpieces but also lent his voice to many of them. On occasion, he performed duets with his ex-wife, the renowned Lalon singer Farida Parveen.

In addition to his musical achievements, Abu Zafar was a prolific writer who authored several books, including “Notun Raatri Purono Din,” “Bazare Durnam Tobu Tumi Sarbosso,” “Biplobotter Soviet Kobita,” and “Tumi Raat Ami Raatjaga Pakhi.” His literary works span poetry and translations, reflecting his deep engagement with culture and thought.

Abu Zafar’s professional career extended beyond the arts into academia. He served as a professor of Bengali at Chuadanga Government College and Kushtia Government College before retiring in 2000. His contributions to Bangladesh’s cultural heritage were further amplified through his work with Rajshahi and Dhaka Betar (radio) and Bangladesh Television.

As a father of two sons and one daughter, Abu Zafar’s personal life was as rich as his professional endeavors. His passing marks the end of an era for Bangladeshi music and literature, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
