Former IGP Mamun Faces 78 Days of Remand in Multiple Murder Cases

Summary:

  • Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun has now been granted 78 cumulative days of remand across multiple cases since his September 2024 arrest.
  • A Dhaka court approved 3 additional days of interrogation in the Jatrabari police station murder case, rejecting defense claims of redundant custody.
  • The victim, Md. Masudur Rahman Johnny, died from bullet injuries sustained during 2024 anti-discrimination protests near a police station, allegedly involving law enforcement and ruling party activists.
  • Judicial authorities have repeatedly extended Mamun’s detention period, citing his oversight role as police chief during the protest-related violence.

A Dhaka court has granted three more days of remand for former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun in connection with the murder of pedestrian Md. Masudur Rahman Johnny during last year’s student-led anti-discrimination protests. This brings the total remand period granted to the ex-police chief across multiple cases to 78 days since his arrest on September 3, 2024.

Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Istiyak issued the latest remand order Monday after hearing arguments from both prosecution and defense lawyers. CID Police Inspector Sikdar Mahitul Alam, the investigating officer, sought a 10-day remand in the Jatrabari Police Station case while defense counsel argued their client had already disclosed all relevant information during previous interrogations.

“My client has already spent 75 days in remand and shared everything he knows. Further custody serves no investigative purpose,” defense lawyers contended during proceedings. The 40-year-old victim died August 12, 2024, at Mitford Hospital after sustaining bullet wounds near Jatrabari police station on August 5 while returning home from work. Family members allege the shooting involved both law enforcement and activists from Awami League-affiliated organizations.

The case marks one of several high-profile investigations stemming from last year’s nationwide protests, which saw prolonged clashes between demonstrators and security forces. Mamun served as police chief during the peak of the unrest before being transferred ahead of schedule in August 2024. Judicial authorities have extended his detention multiple times across different police stations since his initial arrest.
