Summary:
- Bangladesh government confirms jobs for July uprising martyrs’ families will follow merit-based recruitment, not quota system
- One eligible family member to receive position in govt/semi-govt/private sectors based on competence per affected household
- Lifetime monthly allowances announced for protesters permanently disabled (blind/amputees) during 2025 pro-democracy movement
- State emphasizes rehabilitation as “responsibility” rather than compensation, prioritizing dignity over material benefits
Information and Broadcasting Adviser Nahid Islam announced on 11 February 2025 that employment opportunities for families of July uprising martyrs will not fall under Bangladesh’s quota system. The clarification comes amid efforts to provide financial and vocational support to victims’ families while maintaining merit-based recruitment processes.
“Jobs for family members of the July martyrs have been announced alongside one-time financial assistance and monthly allowances, but this will not be included as a new quota in competitive recruitment tests,” Nahid stated via his official Facebook page. Eligible individuals will receive positions in government, semi-government, or private organizations based on competence, with the provision applying only once per family.
The government has also introduced lifetime monthly allowances for protesters permanently disabled during the 2025 protests, including those who lost limbs or vision. Nahid emphasized that thousands of families faced severe disruptions due to their participation in the pro-democracy movement, noting: “We cannot compensate their losses, but we aim to ensure these families’ futures through dignified rehabilitation.”
Authorities reiterated that the measures reflect state responsibility rather than political tokenism, with Nahid adding: “These families seek respect, not benefits.” The July uprising, a pivotal youth-led movement demanding systemic reforms, left lasting physical and economic scars on participants, prompting the current rehabilitation initiatives.
