Summary:

  • A survey by the Police Reform Commission shows 88.7% of Bangladeshis want a politically neutral police force.
  • The survey reveals 89.5% believe reforms are needed to prevent police from being used for political purposes.
  • The call for reform follows criticism of police brutality during recent anti-government protests in Bangladesh.
  • 95% of respondents support changes to prevent misuse of laws for suppressing opposition, highlighting public demand for accountability.

A recent survey conducted by the Police Reform Commission in Bangladesh has revealed a strong public demand for a politically neutral police force. The survey, titled “What Kind of Police Do We Want,” highlights that an overwhelming 88.7% of respondents desire a police force free from political influence, while 89.5% believe reforms are necessary to prevent the police from being used for political purposes.

The survey results were announced on December 3, 2024, through a statement signed by Abu Mamtaz Sad Uddin Ahmed, an additional secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs and member-secretary of the Police Reform Commission. The findings are available on the commission’s website.

The call for reform comes amid widespread criticism of the police’s role in suppressing anti-government protests in Bangladesh. These protests, which have been ongoing since 2022, have seen numerous instances of police brutality and have intensified public distrust in law enforcement. The protests culminated in a significant political shift in August 2024, leading to the resignation and exile of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The survey involved 24,442 participants, with the largest group being employed individuals (36.4%), followed by students (27.2%). It also revealed that 86.2% of respondents want a police force committed to impartiality and the rule of law, while 84% demand an end to corruption within the police.

Moreover, 95% of those surveyed support reforms to address the misuse of criminal procedure laws that have historically enabled “fake” or “ghost” cases used to suppress opposition voices. This sentiment reflects a broader public outcry against the systemic abuse of power by law enforcement agencies.

The need for police reform in Bangladesh is further underscored by international perspectives. Experts argue that moving away from outdated colonial-era laws and establishing a democratic, citizen-centered policing model is crucial. Such reforms should include creating independent oversight bodies and implementing transparent operational practices to ensure accountability and rebuild public trust.

As Bangladesh navigates this critical juncture, the interim government led by Dr. Yunus has initiated steps towards reform by establishing the Police Reform Commission. However, achieving meaningful change will require sustained political will and active participation from civil society and international partners.

The survey results highlight a pivotal opportunity for Bangladesh to transform its police force into an institution that upholds justice and human rights, fostering a safer and more equitable society for all its citizens.
